Final Costume

Final fabricated costume design for Joan Savvy from "Joan Savvy's First Day on Earth." Joan Savvy costume design, fabrication, sourcing, and styling by Phoebe Fischer. I designed and fabricated Joan's jumbo button tights using my sublimation printer and heat press. I designed and hand-stitched polka-dot ribbon and a button accent to Joan's hat to incorporate the whimsical polka-dot, hand-crafted motifs throughout the film. Played by Jackie Campion.

Final fabricated costume design for Joan Savvy from "Joan Savvy's First Day on Earth." Joan Savvy costume design, fabrication, sourcing, and styling by Phoebe Fischer. I designed and fabricated Joan's jumbo button tights using my sublimation printer and heat press. I designed and hand-stitched polka-dot ribbon and a button accent to Joan's hat to incorporate the whimsical polka-dot, hand-crafted motifs throughout the film. Played by Jackie Campion.

ROPES Photoshoot directed by Morgan Lee Costume Design and Editorial Styling by Phoebe Fischer. In my research on dolls, I imagined creating physical paper doll accessories to imply that the model is viewed as 2-dimensional, posable, interchangeable, and flimsy. I hand-painted these paper-doll accessories and garments on glossy poster board, scaling them to human size. I paired these with handmade doll accessory earrings.

I found these shoes in a Goodwill on the hunt for hyperfeminine, doll-like shoes for this close-up shot, and these plastic hot pink heels instantly evoked Barbie. Paired with the glittering blood spilling from the model's heel, I wanted to draw connections between the glamorous, hyperfeminine footwear worn by Barbies and the pain that accompanies those very shoes. ROPES Photoshoot directed by Morgan Lee. Costume Design and Editorial Styling by Phoebe Fischer. The photoshoot's themes of entrapment, glamor, and the limitations and constraints placed on "model beauty" inspired me to work with duct tape to create a bandage-style corset remniscent of the bandage dresses that were on trend in the 2000s. I built the corset on the model's body by layering patterned duct tape over a skin-tight layer of saran wrap, deliberately making it uncomfortably tight. Although the top looks like it could be on trend, glamorously store bought, its material and method of construction speaks to the feeling of being trapped, bound, and even held against one's will. To maintain the through line of dolls, I created a corset cuff bracelet out of a barbie skirt.

For this costume, I created a rosette ribbon (remniscent of a prize-winning animal at a county fair) out of ribbons and a measuring tape. I wanted to convey the importance and correlation placed upon women between their measurements and their worth, and turn it into a wearable ornament/prize. I created the jumbo-sized pearl strand out of playpen balls, as I wanted to make the model feel smaller through the use of supersized accessories to reinforce the idea that models are often dolls being dressed up and put in boxes.

I wanted to maintain the theme of bondage as a throughline throughout the shoot, so for this model, I used gift ribbon to create a "ballet-ribbons-gone-wild" effect that juxtaposed hyperfemininity and ballet aesthetics with entrapment. The ribbons, instruments of decoration and ornamentation, become grotesque in their excess.

Lee's narrative photoshoot explored themes of entrapment, control, feminine beauty performance, and body commodification through campy/glamorous horror aesthetics. Her concept inspired me to research historical Barbie dolls (icons of both glamor and aspiration and of entrapment) which appeared in the handmade doll accessory jewelry, in the pinup hyperfeminine lingerie, and in the 1960s hair and makeup styling of this model.
